Tree removal in progress

How to Know If a Tree Should Be Cut Down

Not every tree can (or should) be saved. Knowing the warning signs can protect both your property and your family.

In Northwest Arkansas, our mix of hardwoods and ornamentals means trees often live long, healthy lives. But storms, pests, or disease can push a tree beyond recovery.

When that happens, timely removal is the safest and most responsible choice.

It can be hard to tell when a tree is past its prime.

The signs aren't always obvious, and it's wise to be sure the tree can't be saved before removing it.

That said, there are some definite red flags to look out for if you aren't sure. Read on to find our pick of the most obvious signs your tree may be in severe trouble.

Signs of Severe Structural Damage

Trees that have large cracks in the trunk, hollow sections, or major limbs splitting away are at high risk of failure.

Even if the canopy looks healthy, hidden structural issues can cause the tree to collapse suddenly, especially under the weight of ice or during spring storms.

Extensive Dead or Dying Branches

A few dead branches can usually be trimmed away, but if more than half the canopy is lifeless, the tree is unlikely to recover.

At that point, it becomes more of a liability than an asset, shedding limbs unpredictably and inviting pests.

Root Problems

Since roots anchor and feed the tree, their decline often spells the end.

Signs include mushrooms or fungus growing at the base, heaving soil, or a tree that begins to lean.

Root rot is nearly impossible to reverse, and a compromised root system can make the tree unstable.

Invasive or Hazardous Species

Some trees (like Bradford pear or boxelder) are known for weak wood and aggressive spreading.

If one of these is planted near a structure, driveway, or power line, it may be safer to remove it before it causes damage.

Safety and Property Protection

The bottom line: if a tree threatens your home, vehicles, or the people who live there, removal is often the wisest choice.

Understanding the warning signs early can prevent costly damage and improve the safety of your property.
